People with a high level of intelligence always enjoy success and respect in society. Therefore, everyone wants to be smart. How to determine the quality of natural intelligence? The answer to this question man received only at the beginning of the 20th century.
What is IQ
The intelligence quotient (IQ) determines a person’s level of thinking abilities, expressed in numbers. Why do people need this? There are several reasons for this:
is important for a person to feel smart;
helps to choose the appropriate type of activity;
contributes to the rapid solution of tasks.
A high natural mind gives a person advantages in studying or in work, helps to better understand himself and others.
Who created the first IQ, and how to measure it
Although the term itself was invented by William Stern only in 1912, the first IQ intelligence test appeared in 1907. It was formulated by the French psychologist Alfred Binet. It was not in his mind to create something global for all mankind. Binet carried out the instruction of the Ministry of Education of France to create a program for low-achieving schoolchildren.
With his test, the scientist wanted to help the education system pull up weak students to a higher level of mastery of school material. In the research, the psychologist was assisted by the doctor Theodore Simon. Their work became the world’s first instrument for measuring the level of the intelligence. It was called the Binet-Simon IQ test.
The level of intelligence is checked in different age groups. Researchers try to determine the average indicator of thinking abilities for each of them. Psychologists find such tasks, the solution of which is within the power of about 70% of representatives of one group. Testing allows you to find a basic level of mental abilities, which is called mental age. It is determined as a result of comparing all participants in the study group.
How to determine your level of intelligence? To do this, take your mental age and divide it by the number of your years. Multiply the result by 100. For example, your mental age is 20 years, and you are 18 from birth. Using the formula 20/18(100), you will get the number 110. This will be your IQ.
What limitations does the IQ test have
Can the quality of intelligence be considered a universal tool for determining people’s mental abilities? It’s hard to answer the question in the affirmative. IQ has several limitations. It does not take into account the diversity of cultures: the level of effectiveness depends on the place where the test is created and the territories where it is applied.
IQ does not test all kinds of intelligence. It is aimed only at determining the level of reasoning and problem solving. From this one can conclude that people who do not have certain skills in solving problems have a low intelligence quotient. This conclusion does not seem correct.
