But for the ones who have English as a second language, it is not a cakewalk. • Listening

To make the students listen tell them stories. No, don’t read from the textbook but tell them stories face to face explaining with various sounds, expressions, etc. Listening is a very important skill that a language learner must have because it is through listening that they catch the language at first. Therefore make sure you make the students listen to what you are saying. This way they will know how things are pronounced, what to say in a particular situation, etc.

To make the process of listening more interesting, make it interactive. You can ask questions in between, act as if you have forgotten something, and make the students recollect it, etc. are some methods that can be used.

  • Speaking

The next skill that a student catch from the teacher or another person is the skill of speaking. The students will try to imitate what you are saying. Thus through imitation, they study the skill of speaking. For making this process better make sure you are talking simple sentences. Your pronunciation should be right and perfect so that the children can grasp the right pronunciation. While speaking stress the sounds of each letter. This will help them grasp the pronunciation more easily.

Also to improve the speaking skills conduct different games or programs in the class which make the students speak English. Always make sure that the sentences are simple, because small children may not understand long complicated sentences.

Initiate conversations with the children. Ask them about something they like or small questions like what did you eat for breakfast, did you play yesterday, and alike. This will interest the small students and they will reply with great excitement. So while speaking you can correct their mistakes. Make sure you don’t do it too much because this can sometimes hurt them, and will affect them while speaking English afterward.

  • Reading

If you can develop the habit of reading in the students, you are halfway there in making them perfect with the language. Reading is an important activity that should be developed in every student to make them more perfected in the language. Through reading they will come across new vocabulary, new situations, pronunciation of a word, etc.

To make reading a habit make children read together in the class and then individually. This will improve their reading skills. Teachers can also conduct different reading programs, like reading a book a month, reading something to your best friend, etc.

  • Writing

The fourth most important skill while learning a language is Writing. Through this, they will study the spellings, how to form a sentence, the proper writing method, etc.

Journal writing is a very helpful method that will make sure that the students are writing every day. Tell the students to write about something that happened the day before, it can be anything. At first, make them write short pieces with about five sentences and then slowly increase the number of sentences.

  • New Words

While studying a new language students will come across many new words. It may sometimes be difficult for them to remember these words for a longer time. Thus make sure the teachers use the words often. It will also be helpful if the students see the words often written somewhere.

While teaching a new word, write it down by reading it out loud. This will make the students understand how each letter is pronounced in the word. They will know what each letter is and how to spell them.

Organize words into groups, this can help the students grasp the words more easily. For example, take the example of the classroom and teach words connected to that one word, like a teacher, student, books, pen, pencil, etc.

Conduct various spelling games. Spelling tests can help. Or give them a long word like DINOSOUROURS and tell them to make as many words as possible from this one word. Games such as these interest the students and they will learn fast.

  • Use Learning Materials

The usage of materials like pictures, cartoons, flip cards, flashcards, etc. can also interest the students. They will listen to the class with more dedication when the teacher is using such things in front of them. Lots of visual usages are also recommended because while teaching a small child tends to understand a picture more than words. Thus the usage of pictures, drawings, 30d structures, etc. is recommended.

  • Make the Process Simple and Fun

The process of learning should be made as simple and fun as possible. As the students are very small it is things that interest them that work more in the process of teaching and learning. Use of Nursery Rhymes, doing roleplays, etc. are recommended methods.

Teachers can also use technology in the process, take the class outside the classroom and show them different things, mix and match different methods of teaching, etc.

Also, make sure that no pressure is put on the children while teaching. As they are small little things tend to hurt them the most, and this can remain a scar for a long time. Thus, make sure to treat the students with love, care, and most important of all Patience.
