According to the information received from various organizations in the tourism sector, Cox’s Bazar is number one on tourist attractions. Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari are the following three districts in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Sylhet is in the third position in the list of favorites. Apart from visiting the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal and Shahparan, tourists are also visiting various places of natural beauty, including tea gardens in Sylhet. The list also includes Sundarbans, Kuakata, St. Martin, Paharpur, etc. Various resorts in Gazipur, very close to Dhaka, are now top-rated for sightseeing.
Every year thousands of tourists visit various places of interest in Bangladesh.
According to the Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB), an organization of tourism businessmen, 5 to 6 million people visit different parts of the country every year. Even five years ago, this number was 25 to 30 lakhs. And in the year 2000, this number was only 3 to 5 lakhs. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, 1.5 million people are directly employed in Bangladesh’s tourism sector. And indirectly 23 lakh more people are associated with this sector. In all, the sector has created employment for about 4 million people. In terms of financial value, the domestic tourism sector’s size stands at least Tk 4,000 crore.
