Cox’s Bazar is most popular with domestic tourists as it offers the opportunity to see the sea and mountains together. Earlier, there was a lot of crowd during the winter season, but now tourists flock to Cox’s Bazar almost all the year-round. Four hundred fifty hotels, motels, and resorts have been set up in Cox’s Bazar to accommodate tourists. There are five-star quality hotels, as well as low-cost accommodation.
Cox’s Bazar hosts about 2 million tourists a year.
According to transport traders, an average of at least 100 buses leaves Dhaka for Cox’s Bazar every day. Bangladesh Biman and three private airlines fly an average of 10 flights a day to Cox’s Bazar. As a result, 1.5 million people go to Cox’s Bazar by road and air every year. Besides, 2-3 lakh more people went to Cox’s Bazar by rail and from there by road and in private cars. In all, Cox’s Bazar hosts about 2 million tourists a year.
Although the three hill districts are popular with tourists, there is less accommodation here. So the number of tourists visiting here during the day is more. But in Sylhet, it is the other way around. According to the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce, there are now 325 small and large hotels in the entire city of Sylhet. Apart from this, there are some hotels which are out of the calculation. In all, 10 to 12 lakh people visit Sylhet every year, the second-highest number of tourists.
The Sundarbans is the most attractive destination for tourists in the south.
Two and a half lakh people now visit the Sundarbans every year. Paharpur in Naogaon, Mahasthan in Bogra, and Kantjiu Temple in Dinajpur top the list of tourist attractions in North Bengal. 3 to 3 lakh tourists visit these places.
President Tawfiq Uddin Ahmed told Prothom Alo that the main reason for the increase in domestic tourism is developing the country’s middle class. People’s financial capacity has increased more than before. As a result, the business of tour operators is getting better than before.
